Ann Catherine Danyo Spangler

ANN CATHERINE DANYO SPANGLER, 95, of Versailles, Ky., formerly of Kenova, W.Va., died peacefully from the complications of pneumonia, Saturday, March 1,2014, at the hospice care unit of Hospice of the Bluegrass at Saint Joseph Hospital, Lexington. Born on September 30, 1918, in Plainfield, N.J., she was the third of six children of the late Michael Danyo and Anna Butula Danyo, and was preceded in death by her brothers Andrew, Joseph and John Danyo, and by her younger sister Margaret Danyo Giddes. She is survived by her older sister Mary Danyo Kassey of Belvidere, N.J., and a sister-in-law and dear friend Beatrice K. Danyo of South Plainfield, N.J., in addition to her two sons and a daughter-in-law, David L. Spangler and Linda Wilson Spangler of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and John M. Spangler of Versailles, Ky., and one granddaughter and her husband, Kristi and Phil Hebner of Ashland, Va., mother of Ann's two great-grandchildren, Riley and Bryce Hebner. Ann was the widow of John L. Spangler Jr., a former city councilman in Kenova, who died in 1981, her husband of 35 years. She enlisted in the Women's Army Corps during the Second World War and served in England, France and Germany; she and her late husband met during training at Wilmington, N.C., corresponded during the war, and married shortly after its conclusion. She lived a simple, peaceful life in Kenova, her favorite place on earth. She loved her family, church and country, and was active in St. Ann's Circle at her church, the Wayne County Democratic Women's Club, and volunteer work at Cabell Huntington Hospital. May this sweet little Jersey girl rest in peace in these West Virginia hills that she came to love. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker and to the staff of Taylor Manor Nursing Home, Versailles, Ky., for their loving care of the deceased during the several years that she was with them. Funeral arrangements are by the Rollins Funeral Home Kenova, W.Va., where visitation will occur from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, with visitation beginning at 9 a.m., at Ann's parish church for sixty-years, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 2015 Adams Avenue, Huntington, with Father Charles J. McGinnis Jr., as celebrant, with interment following at Hillcrest Cemetery, near Kenova.
